"A riveting play, remarkably funny and moving. A tour-de-force. Five stars."
- The Scotsman
"In 1993 British actor John Graham Davies set off on a 2000 mile
journey across Europe with a raggle-taggle group of ex-soldiers, young unemployed,
teachers, bus drivers and a professional burglar. Their aim: to take aid to
the multiethnic enclave in Tuzla in Bosnia. Davies knows what he is talking
about and in 80 minutes he makes you understand more about the complexities
of the situation, the real human confusion, than a dozen newspaper reports."
- The Guardian
"This one-man Balkan tour-de force is a humorous and chilling
evening of thought provoking theater based on true events. Davies is an immensely
skilled performer, convincing in every incarnation. This is a show that demonstrates
how theater can flourish at the intersection of the personal and the political."
- The Edmonton Journal
In "Taking Sides," a cosmopolitan Bosniak guide, Aziz,
introduces the audience to his home town of Tuzla and to a series of fascinating
characters including Bajram, a Kosovar miner hiding from the ethnic cleansers;
Benny, a Birmingham Jew who decided to go to Bosnia after reading the message
on the back of an old family photograph; Dragomir, a Serb oppositionist living
in French exile; Rolf, a hardened Dutch soldier whose secrets from Srebrenica
is eating him up; and Dean, an unemployed ex-car thief from Yorkshire.
JOHN GRAHAM DAVIES has acted for some of the most prestigious theater and television
companies in the UK and was a member of the Canadian National Theater for its
inaugural two seasons. He has worked with acclaimed British writers and appeared
in many British TV series and dramas. For three years he played DCI Peter Adams
in BBC's Hetty Wainthropp Investigates.
MARCUS ROMER is Artistic Director of
Pilot Theater Company. His acclaimed production of Lord of the Flies is re-touring
in Britain and will transfer off-Broadway. It was nominated for an award at
this year's Society of West End Theater Awards.
