| Cat Chow is a Chicago artist who fabricates
sculptural garments using mundane yet unconventional materials such as
zippers, dollar bills, band-aids and baby bottle nipples. Having once
worked as a chain mail fabricator (for Renaissance fairs), Chow is partial
to a related linking construction process of these industrial or found
materials. Her garments contain subtle allusions to traditional fashion
modes such as "the white wedding dress" and also hint at issues
such as fashion 's constraints upon the feminine form - reinforced by
punning titles such as Tied and Trained. Her work thus invites us to re-examine
fashion in relation to issues of social context and sexual identity. Chow's
work has been included in several group exhibitions, most prominently
at The Contemporary Arts Museum in Houston, Texas; the New Museum of Contemporary
Art, New York City; and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago. This
year she had her first solo exhibition at the Chicago Cultural Center.
Chow was recently the recipient of an Artists' Fellowship Award from the
Illinois Arts Council. She is currently an Instructor in the Fashion Department
at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
